6-Week Gottman Couples Therapy Block

6 Week Block

Week 1 — Joint Session + Relationship History

  • Gottman intake interview (oral history interview)

  • Presenting issues & goals

  • Relationship timeline + major stressors

  • Explanation of the Gottman Method & Sound Relationship House

  • Administer the Gottman Relationship Checkup (online assessment)

Week 2 — Individual Partner Sessions

  • One individual session per partner

  • Explore personal background, family of origin, stress response patterns, triggers, and perception of the relationship

  • Assess Gottman “Four Horsemen” tendencies individually

  • Review safety, commitment, and relationship expectations

  • Identify the strengths both partners bring

Week 3 — Assessment Results Review + Feedback Session #1

  • Review combined Gottman Relationship Checkup results

  • Identify:

    • Friendship strengths

    • Areas of emotional connection needing support

    • Conflict patterns and specific Four Horsemen behaviours

  • Introduction to Love Maps, Fondness & Admiration

  • Begin implementing antidotes to criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling

Week 4 — Feedback Session #2 + Conflict Management Skills

  • Deeper dive into

    • Gridlocked vs. solvable problems

    • Detecting flooding

    • Conflict triggers are unique to the couple

  • Teach and practice:

    • Softened Start-Up

    • Accepting influence

    • Repair attempts

    • Self-soothing during conflict

  • Introduce the Aftermath of a Fight protocol for use at home

Week 5 — Building Connection & Strengthening the Sound Relationship House

  • Rituals of Connection

  • Turning Toward vs. Turning Away exercises

  • Shared meaning + values discussion

  • Stress-Reducing Conversation practice

  • Homework: daily bids for connection + appreciation exercises

Week 6 — Integration + Future Plan

  • Review what has shifted

  • Strengthened friendship + communication summary

  • Plan for maintaining progress

  • Assign couple-specific rituals and communication structures

  • Discuss whether ongoing sessions or a maintenance schedule is needed

  • 10 Sessions (More Depth & Advanced Gottman Work)

    Along with everything in the 6-week block, the extra sessions allow you to go deeper into Gottman interventions:

    Session 7 — Processing Regrettable Incidents

    • Full practice of Aftermath of a Fight/Rupture protocol

    • Identify escalation cycles

    • Map each partner’s internal stress system

    • Practice interrupting conflict patterns in real time

    Session 8 — Perpetual Problem Work

    • Work with a gridlocked perpetual problem

    • Use Dreams Within Conflict exercise

    • Explore underlying dreams, values, and vulnerabilities

    • Begin compromise strategies

    Session 9 — Advanced Friendship & Intimacy Work

    • Expand Love Maps

    • Build long-term fondness & admiration rituals

    • Deepen emotional, physical, and sexual intimacy conversations

    • Develop daily and weekly connection habits

    Session 10 — Long-Term Relationship Maintenance Plan

    • Personalized Gottman-based Relationship Roadmap

    • Rituals for conflict repair

    • Preventative strategies

    • Solidify roles, agreements, and shared meaning themes

    • Optional: create a “relationship contract” or 90-day plan
